The packing structures of 1-3 also show that the rings of the polypyridyl ligands, Ph2phen, dpa, bpy, and phen, are not located face-to-face and can not interact through pi-pi interactions. Cyclic voltammetry data of 1 and 3 show that the Ni(III/II) reduction couple is quasi-reversible and this reduction becomes progressively more difficult on passing from bpy to Ph2phen, while complex 2 shows an irreversible behavior with the peak-to-peak separation of about 500 mV. Magnetic susceptibility data derived from paramagnetic NMR revealed effective magnetic moments of 3.12 BM for 1, 3.27 BM for 2, and 3.14 for 3 at room temperature.

The residue at 1000 C was estimated from TG curves as a carbonaceous mixture of ZnO. The molecular structure, the alternate coordination mode of 3-OCH3-salo ligand, the isomerism and the energetics of the metal-ligand interactions for compounds 2 and 5 have been studied by means of density functional theory (DFT) calculations.

Single-molecule magnets (SMMs) and single-chain magnets (SCMs) are potential candidates for more dense data storage and quantum computing as well as providing interesting systems with which to study the physics behind molecular magnetism. Despite only being discovered in 2001, the field of SCM is experiencing rapid growth and already shows promise with regard to improving on the blocking temperatures (TB) achievable by SMMs. Indeed, to date, the record TB values for SCMs vs SMMs are running neck and neck, at 14K vs 13.9K, respectively. This review details the range of building blocks and linkers that, prior to 1 January 2014, have been used to prepare complexes that were reported to be SCMs. Then, as X-ray structure determinations are of crucial importance, a summary of the crystallisation methods that can be used to assemble the building blocks (usually Ising centres) and linkers into 1D chains, in the form of single crystals, is provided. A table summarising the building blocks/linkers and crystallisation methods, CSD codes, and key magnetic parameters, for the SCMs reported pre-2014, is provided as a useful resource for researchers in this field. The reader is referred to previous excellent reviews for a description of the theory and terms used in the field of SCM: this review instead takes a synthetic chemists perspective, presenting the components and crystallisation methods employed to generate complexes reported to be SCMs, pre-2014.

The synthesis of eight mixed-ligand cobalt(II) complexes with 2,2?-dipyridylamine (dpamH) and substituted salicylaldehydes (X-saloH) was undertaken in an effort to discover new compounds with anticancer activity. The complexes with the general formula [Co(dpamH)2(X-salo)]Y, (Y = Br or Cl) were characterized by elemental analyses, FT-IR and UV-visible spectroscopy, magnetic and conductivity measurements. The structures of two of them [Co(dpamH)2(5-CH3-salo)]Br and [Co(dpamH) 2(3-OCH3-salo)]Cl, as well as of the precursors [Co(dpamH)3]Br2 and [Co(dpamH)2Cl(H 2O)]Cl, were determined by X-ray crystallography revealing octahedral coordination of cobalt(II) and mononuclear complexes. The complexes were thermally stable up to 200 C in nitrogen atmosphere, studied by simultaneous TG/DTG-DTA technique. The two precursor Co compounds, as well as four of the title compounds, were evaluated for their efficacy as anticancer agents against different cancer and normal human cell lines. The in vitro chemosensitivity of various human cell lines to these Co complexes was evaluated by measuring cell growth inhibition by employing the SRB colorimetric assay. A series of experiments showed a dose-dependent cytotoxic activity of the complexes against all cell lines used. These findings represent a prompting to search for possible interaction of these complexes with other cellular elements of fundamental importance in cell proliferation.

Moreover, the complex 1-VP was found to be inactive against MCF-7 (breast adenocarcinoma), PANC-1 (pancreatic adenocarcinoma) and HT-29 (colon carcinoma) up to a concentration of 100 muM. Detailed flow cytometry studies indicated that treatment of A2780 cells with complex 1-VP led to induction of apoptosis, production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and superoxide (SO) anion radicals, as well as mitochondrial membrane potential depletion and cell cycle perturbations. The microscopic assessment (standard hematoxylin/eosin staining) revealed signs of morphological changes associated with the progression of apoptosis in A2780 cells treated with the IC50 concentration of the complex 1-VP. Consistent with the intracellular production of ROS and SO, the complex 1-VP induced hydroxyl radical formation, as proved by EPR spin trapping experiments. This case study suggests that replacement of the chlorido ligand of half-sandwich Os(ii) complexes by a releasable monodentate biologically active ligand (e.g., VP used in this study) is an effective strategy for the development of novel non-platinum cytotoxic agents.
