The present investigation reports the synthesis of mixed-ligand complexes of the type MAL, where M = Ni(II), Zn(II), Cd(II) A = 2,2?-bipyridylamine and H2L1 = catechol, H2L2 = pyrogallol, H2L3 = 2,3-dihydroxynaphthalene, H2L4 = protocatechuic acid. Their structures have been elucidated on the basis of elemental analyses, conductivity, thermogravimetric, magnetic moments and IR spectroscopy. The results are in accord with an octahedral environment around the central metal ions except for Ni(II). All chelates are diamagnetic. A study of the thermal properties has also been carried out.

The X-ray diffraction study of [Zn(3-OCH3-salo)2(bipy)]·CH3OH (2) and [Zn(3-OCH3-salo)2(dpamH)] (5) confirmed the coordination mode of the 3-OCH3-salo ligand to the zinc cation through the phenolate and methoxy oxygen atoms, as predicted from the spectroscopic data. The thermal stability of the compounds [Zn(3-OCH3-salo)2(enR)] was investigated by the simultaneous TG/DTG-DTA technique and compared with the precursor (1). The residue at 1000 C was estimated from TG curves as a carbonaceous mixture of ZnO. The molecular structure, the alternate coordination mode of 3-OCH3-salo ligand, the isomerism and the energetics of the metal-ligand interactions for compounds 2 and 5 have been studied by means of density functional theory (DFT) calculations.

In 1, each pair of 1D chains recognize each other through strong hydrogen bond formed by active amine (-NH-) hydrogen and aromatic pi-pi stacking interactions to generate a zipperlike double-stranded chain. In contrast, when the substitutions of tpy for dpa further enhance the pi-pi aromatic stacking interactions, complex 2 is directly constructed into 2D zipperlike layers by the unprecedented aromatic pi-pi stacking interactions that same orientated aromatic chelate ligands are simultaneously attached to both sides of the chain and the significant C-H?O hydrogen bonds. These layers are constructed through hydrogen bonds and result in a 3D supramolecular network with 1D open channels, in which exists an unprecedented one-dimensional water chain. Both were magnetically characterized, showing weak ferromagnetic behavior.

The recently reported luminescent chromium(III) complex 13+ ([Cr(ddpd)2]3+; ddpd=N,N?-dimethyl-N,N?-dipyridine-2-yl-pyridine-2,6-diamine) shows exceptionally strong near-IR emission at 775 nm in water under ambient conditions (Phi=11 %) with a microsecond lifetime as the ligand design in 13+ effectively eliminates non-radiative decay pathways, such as photosubstitution, back-intersystem crossing, and trigonal twists. In the absence of energy acceptors, such as dioxygen, the remaining decay pathways are energy transfer to high energy solvent and ligand oscillators, namely OH and CH stretching vibrations. Selective deuteration of the solvents and the ddpd ligands probes the efficiency of these oscillators in the excited state deactivation. Addressing these energy-transfer pathways in the first and second coordination sphere furnishes a record 30 % quantum yield and a 2.3 millisecond lifetime for a metal complex with an earth-abundant metal ion in solution at room temperature.
