A study of the 8466 structures reported in Inorganica Chimica Acta: 52 Space group changes and their chemical consequences

260 structures published in Inorganica Chimica Acta present some problem about their crystal and molecular symmetry, moreover 41 compounds have been already corrected in this journal or in other journals. The unavailability of the structure factors tables has prevented a complete correction, in fact, we have reached a definitive result only for 52 crystalline compounds. These are divided into five categories: (A) incorrect Laue Group (19 examples), (B) omission of a centre of symmetry (20 examples), (C) incorrect Laue group and omission of a centre of symmetry (one example) (D) omission of a centre of symmetry coupled with a failure to recognize systematic absences (10 examples) and finally (E) non-space group translations (two examples). Moreover, other 44 examples of non-space group translations might be present, but we have not reached a definitive result for the unavailability of the structure factor tables.

Hysteretic thermal spin-crossover in heteroleptic Fe(ii) complexes using alkyl chain substituted 2,2?-dipyridylamine ligands

The alkyl chain carrying ligands N,N-di(pyridin-2-yl)butanamide (LC4) and N,N-di(pyridin-2-yl)decanamide (LC10) were combined with NCS- co-ligands to form the neutral heteroleptic Fe(ii) complexes trans-[FeII(LC4)2(NCS)2] (1C4) and trans-[FeII(LC10)2(NCS)2] (1C10). Variable temperature crystallographic studies revealed that 1C4 is in the orthorhombic space group Pna21 between 85-200 K whereas 1C10 is in the monoclinic space group P21/c between 85-140 K. The average Fe-N bond lengths suggest that at 85 K 1C4 contains LS Fe(ii) centres; however, the ca. 0.18 A increase in the average Fe-N bond lengths between 85 and 120 K suggests a spin-transition to the HS state occurs within this temperature interval. 1C10 contains LS Fe(ii) centres between 85 and 105 K. Upon warming from 105 to 140 K the average Fe-N bond lengths increase by ca. 0.19 A, which suggests a spin-transition to the HS state. Solid-state magnetic susceptibility measurements showed that 1C4 undergoes semi-abrupt spin-crossover with T1/2 = 127.5 K and a thermal hysteresis of ca. 13 K whereas, 1C10 undergoes an abrupt spin-crossover with T1/2 = 119.0 K, and is also accompanied by thermal hysteresis of ca. 4 K. The crystallographic and magnetic data show that the length of the complex’s alkyl chain substituents can have a large impact on the structure of the crystal lattice as well as a subtle effect on the T1/2 value for thermal spin-crossover.

Stepwise synthesis of the heterotrimetallic chains [MRu2(dpa)4X2]0/1+ using group 7 to group 12 transition metal ions and [Ru2(dpa)4Cl]

The CoRu2(dpa)4Cl2 (1) (dpa: 2,2?-dipyridylamide) is synthesized by the reaction of Ru2(OAc)4Cl and Co3(dpa)4Cl2. By mixing 1 with NH3, Co2+ can be removed and result in the formation of unique binuclear complex 4,0-Ru2(dpa)4Cl (2) featuring one coordination pocket supported by free pyridine groups. Hence, this complex can act as an outstanding precursor for the formation of heterotrimetallic chains with MRu2 cores. A series of M-Ru25+ complexes (M = Co2+ (3), Ag+ (4), Mn2+ (5), Fe2+ (6), Zn2+ (7), Cd2+ (8), Pd2+ (9), Rh2+ (10), and Ir2+ (11)) were prepared and isolated, representing the most complete series of heterotrimetallic chains to date. All these metal string complexes are in a linear trimetallic framework helically wrapped by four dpa- ligands, characterized by X-ray diffraction measurements. The bending of the trinuclear metal cores in RhRu2 (10) and IrRu2 (11) (?Ru-Ru-Rh: 167.58 and ?Ru-Ru-Ir: 167.61) indicates that a heterometallic metal-metal bonds (Ru-Rh; Ru-Ir) are generated. The studies from DFT calculation of 10 and 11 coincide with the experimental results. Furthermore, the M?Ru25+ distances are regulated by the factors including the bonding force of M-pyridyl and the static repulsion between M and Ru25+ unit. Interestingly, the trend for these distances is in line with that observed in trans-M(py)4Cl2 complexes.

Neutral and cationic ruthenium carbonyl complexes [Ru(CO) (2,2?-dipyridylamine)(PR3)Cl2] and [Ru(CO)(N-N)(PPh3)2(H)]Cl: Synthesis, structural characterization and transfer-hydrogenation

The neutral complexes [Ru(CO)(dpa)(PR3)Cl2] (R = Ph (1) or p-tol (2); dpa = 2,2?-dipyridylamine) were synthesized by the reaction of [Ru(CO)(dmf)(PR3)2Cl2] (dmf = N,N-dimethylformamide) and the dpa ligand, while the cationic carbonyl hydride complexes [Ru(CO) (N-N)(PPh3)2(H)]Cl were synthesized by reaction of [Ru(CO)(PPh3)3Cl(H)] and the appropriate N-N ligand [N-N = 2,2?-bipyridine = bipy (3), 2,2?-4,4?dimethyl-bipyridine = dmb (4) and 2,2?-dipyridylamine = dpa (5)]. The complexes were characterized by NMR (31P, 1H and HMBC 1H-31P), FTIR, elemental analysis and X-ray diffraction. The molecular structure of [Ru(CO)(dpa)(PPh3) Cl2] (1) was determined by X-ray crystallography. The crystal packing is stabilized by strong (CH3)O-H…Cl and N-H…OH(CH3) hydrogen bonds between symmetry-related molecules leading to the formation of dimers. Complexes 1-6 were evaluated as pre-catalysts for the reduction of acetophenone under transfer-hydrogenation conditions using isopropanol as hydrogen source, and conversions up to 86 % in 4 h were achieved.

A planar 2,2?-dipyridylammonium salt : Synthesis and structure

Reaction of 2,2?-dipyridylamine (DPA) with hexafluorophosphoric acid (HPF6) in methanol generates white rod-shaped crystals of HDPA.PF6,H2O. The salt is characterised by C, H and N analyses, FT-IR, 1H NMR, mass spectroscopy and molar conductance measurement. The X-ray crystal structure of the salt has been determined. The structure shows that the salt is monomeric. The amine nitrogen is strongly hydrogen bonded with oxygen atom of water. Two pyridyl rings are almost planar which is a rarity in the coordination chemistry of DPA. Semi-empirical AM1 calculation was also performed to delve into the novel situation.

Structure, antimicrobial activity, albumin- and DNA-binding of manganese(II)-sparfloxacinato complexes

Manganese(II) complexes with the quinolone antimicrobial agent sparfloxacin (Hsf) in the absence or presence of the nitrogen-donor heterocyclic ligands 1,10-phenanthroline (phen), 2,2?-bipyridine (bipy), 2,2?-bipyridylamine (bipyam) or pyridine (py) were synthesized and characterized with diverse physicochemical and spectroscopic techniques. The crystal structure of complex [Mn(sf)2(phen)]·4MeOH was determined by X-ray crystallography. In the resultant complexes, the deprotonated sparfloxacinato ligands are bidentately bound to manganese(ii) through the pyridone oxygen and a carboxylato oxygen. The antimicrobial activity of the complexes was tested against four different microorganisms (Escherichia coli, Xanthomonas campestris, Staphylococcus aureus and Bacillus subtilis) and was found to be similar to or higher than free Hsf. The binding of the complexes to calf-thymus DNA (CT DNA) was monitored by UV spectroscopy and DNA viscosity measurements, which indicated intercalation as the most possible mode, and the DNA-binding constants of the complexes were calculated. The ability of the complexes to displace ethidium bromide (EB) from the EB-DNA complex was also investigated. Fluorescence emission spectroscopy was used to evaluate the interaction of the complexes with human or bovine serum albumin proteins revealing their binding with relatively high binding constant values. Kinetic and mechanistic studies of cisplatin analogues bearing 2,2?-dipyridylalkylamine ligands

A series of mononuclear Pt(II) complexes of the type diaqua(2,2?-dipyridylalkylamine)platinum(II) (where the alkyl group = methyl, ethyl, propyl, butyl or hexyl) were synthesized to investigate their nucleophilic substitution behaviour and the influence of the alkyl chain bonded to the tertiary nitrogen atom joining the two pyridine rings on the reactivity of the chosen complexes. The trend in rate constant shows that introduction of the sigma-donating alkyl chain on the tertiary nitrogen joining the two pyridine moieties reduces the pi-acceptor ability of the cis coordinated pyridine rings resulting in a less reactive Pt(II) centre which causes a decrease in the reaction rate. This is well supported by data from DFT calculations. It is also evident that the alkyl chain also introduces a steric effect which blocks the approach of the nucleophile to the Pt(II) centre. The boat-like structure of the six-membered chelate ring also contributes to the steric effect. The study has also shown that two substitution processes going through an associative mode of activation are observed. The first is the simultaneous substitution of the two aqua ligands, and the second is due to the dechelation of the ligand, an indication of possible disintegration of the complex if used as a drug. Graphical Abstract: The substitution reactions of cisplatin analogues and bio-relevant thiourea nucleophiles follow two-step associative processes with the last step encountering a complete dechelation of the ligand.[Figure not available: see fulltext.]

2,2′-Dipyridyltrimethylsilylamine reacts with chloro- and bromomethyl(methyl)chlorosilanes to give Si-functional 1-(2-pyridone-(2′-pyridyl)imine) methylsilanes.Their solid state and solution structures have been determined.Depending on the halogen and the number of halogen atoms neutral pentacoordinate Si-species, RN-2-(C5H4NCH2SiMexCl3-x) (R = 2-C5H4N; x = 1 (2); x = 0 (3)) or ionic tetracoordinate Si-species +Br- (4) are obtained in solution and as solids. The solid compound with x = 2 (1) is also pentacoordinate at Si.In solutionthere is an interesting temperature-dependent equilibrium between the neutral pentacoordinate and the ionic tetracoordinate structure (at lower temperature, NMR) of 1.For the pentacoordinate species dissociation of the coordinative Si-N bond and formation of the neutral tetravalent silanes is suggested at higher temperature in solution. The temperature-dependent equilibrium between the isomers of 1 thus follows reversibly the SN2 pathway of nucleophilic substitution at silicon. The solid state structures of 1 and 3 and of 1-methyl-2-(2′-pyridyl)aminopyridinium chloride (5) are discussed.Structural differences between solid 1 and 3 are interpreted in terms of different stages of the SN2 reaction at silicon.

Two isomers of heteroleptic bis(bidentate) ruthenium(II) complexes with dimethyl sulfoxide (dmso) and chloride ligands, trans(Cl,Nbpy)- and trans(Cl,NHdpa)-[Ru(bpy)Cl(dmso-S)(Hdpa)]+ (bpy: 2,2?-bipyridine; Hdpa: di-2-pyridylamine), are synthesized. This is the first report on the selective synthesis of a pair of isomers of cis-[Ru(L)(L?)XY]n+ (L?L?: bidentate ligands; X?Y: monodentate ligands). The structures of the ruthenium(II) complexes are clarified by means of X-ray crystallography, and the signals in the 1H NMR spectra are assigned based on 1H?1H COSY spectra. The colors of the two isomers are clearly different in both the solid state and solution: the trans(Cl,Nbpy) isomer has a deep red color, whereas the trans(Cl,NHdpa) isomer is yellow. Although both complexes have intense absorption bands at lambda?440?450 nm, only the trans(Cl,Nbpy) isomer has a shoulder band at lambda?550 nm. DFT calculations indicate that the LUMOs of both isomers are the pi* orbitals in the bpy ligand, and that the LUMO level of the trans(Cl,Nbpy) isomer is lower than that of the trans(Cl,NHdpa) isomer due to the trans effect of the Cl ligand; thus resulting in the appearance of the shoulder band. The HOMO levels are almost the same in both isomers. The energy levels are experimentally supported by cyclic voltammograms, in which these isomers have different reduction potentials and similar oxidation potentials.
